This piece originally stated that finalists were selected from applicants across North America. The Purina press release states applicants came from worldwide. The piece also referred to a fellow finalist as PawsitiveTouch. The correct company name is Pawsitive Inc. and its product is the TouchOne smart wearable. Both have been corrected.
Boston based startup PetPax Co. won the $25,000 grand prize at the 2026 Purina Pet Care Innovation Prize on 26 March, beating four finalists in a live pitch competition at Global Pet Expo in Orlando, Florida. The award is one of the most prominent annual platforms for early stage pet care innovation in North America, now in its tenth year.
PetPax was founded by two dog owners, Anthony Gatti and a co founder, focused on improving how supplements are administered to dogs. The company is currently conducting a pre seed raise alongside its prize win, with distribution already expanding across multiple retail channels.
The product: SupplaMelts
PetPax's flagship product line, SupplaMelts, uses a proprietary fast dissolving oral thin film delivery method to administer veterinarian approved supplementation to dogs. The technology is the same thin film format used in some human pharmaceutical products, adapted for canine physiology and dosing.
Current products in the range include ZenMelts for calming and DentalMelts for oral health. The company's patent pending delivery method is positioned around two claimed advantages over conventional chew or powder supplements: improved bioavailability due to faster absorption, and higher compliance rates because the format is easier for owners to administer consistently.
As Gatti noted following the win, the product was developed from personal experience as a dog owner encountering the practical difficulties of getting a dog to reliably take a supplement. That experiential starting point is consistent with a wider pattern in pet care innovation, where founders are increasingly building from owner frustration rather than from the clinical end of the market.
About the Purina Innovation Prize
The Pet Care Innovation Prize is run by Purina's 9Square Ventures corporate venturing group in partnership with Active Capital. It was created to support early stage startups developing meaningful solutions across pet health, nutrition, services and technology. In addition to the $25,000 prize, PetPax receives mentorship from Purina and participation in an accelerator programme.
Four additional finalists each received $25,000 earlier in the programme's cycle. All five companies were selected from a wider pool of applicants worldwide.
Pawsitive Inc., whose TouchOne smart wearable uses neuroscience to monitor and regulate dogs' emotional states in real time, was also notable among the other 2026 finalists.
The supplement market context
The PetPax win sits within a broader shift in how the pet wellness market is evolving. Capstone Partners' March 2026 pet sector analysis noted unrelenting consumer demand for vet backed, targeted, functional food and treats, with the trend expected to continue accelerating throughout 2026. APPA's 2026 State of the Industry Report similarly highlighted rising demand for products that actively support pet health and longevity.
Dogtopia's 2026 trend analysis found that 76% of pet parents actively seek products that can improve their pet's health and wellness, a figure that has been rising steadily as owners increasingly apply human health and longevity thinking to their animals. The supplement and functional wellness segment is one of the fastest growing categories in pet care as a result.
A note from Pawsettle
The PetPax story is a straightforward positive from the innovation end of the pet sector, and we include it because what happens in pet wellness directly affects the people Pawsettle serves. As supplements become more effective, more varied and more widely used, they also become another category of routine pet expense and health decision that shared care arrangements need to accommodate. Who buys the supplements, who administers them, and what happens if one household disagrees with the other's choices are all questions worth settling in writing. Pawsettle's Pet Parenting Agreement is a practical tool for doing exactly that.
