Everything you need to cover Pawsettle. If you are working on a story, we would love to hear from you.

The story

Pawsettle is a platform that helps pet owners and couples document shared pet arrangements and plan ahead for their animal's future. It covers the agreements people make about care, costs, and what happens if circumstances change: who takes the dog if you separate, who covers the vet bills, what your wishes are if you are no longer able to care for your pet yourself. The platform is live in the UK, Australia, Canada, the United States, New Zealand, and Ireland.

Why now

Pet ownership in the UK reached record levels during and after the pandemic. Internationally, legal systems are beginning to catch up: Australia's Family Law Amendment Act 2024 introduced formal recognition of pets in separation proceedings, and British Columbia updated its legislation in 2024 as well. Despite this, there has been no dedicated tool for the millions of people who share an animal and want to plan ahead. Pawsettle fills that space.

What people use it for

Separating couples

A couple who share a dog and are separating use Pawsettle to document who the primary carer is, how costs will be split, and what happens during holidays and emergencies. The agreement does not require a solicitor. It requires honesty and fifteen minutes.

Planning ahead

A single pet owner uses Pawsettle to record what should happen to their cat if they are hospitalised or die. They name a carer, document the cat's routine and medical history, and store it somewhere their family can find it.

Shared households

Three housemates who jointly own a rabbit use Pawsettle to formalise who is responsible for what: feeding, vet appointments, costs, and what happens when one of them moves out.

Taz Ahmad

Founder, Pawsettle

Taz Ahmad is the founder of Pawsettle. He built the platform after recognising that the tools people use to plan shared finances, property, and responsibilities have never extended to the animals they love. Pawsettle is his attempt to close that gap.

There are tools to help you separate your finances, divide your property, even split a shared Netflix account. But if you share a dog, a cat, a horse, or any animal you love with someone, there has been nothing designed for that. It is a peculiar gap, and one that causes more distress than most people expect. With Pawsettle, we are trying to change that.
